Virginia Nelson

Arundel, Maine

Virginia Nadeen (Crouse) "Ginny" Nelson, 100, passed away peacefully early in the morning on August 5, 2026. Surrounded by her surviving children, she shared precious memories and laughter until answering the Lord's call. Ginny lived in her beloved home in East Millinocket for many years up until just before her 100th birthday this year, when she relocated to an independent living community in Kennebec to be closer to her family.

A Life of Joy, Adventure, and Devotion
Ginny was a deeply caring mother who anchored her family with unwavering love, support, encouragement, and a healthy dose of sternness when needed. A remarkably cheerful woman, she was always there for a friend in need of comfort, guidance, or simply a reminder of the joy of life. Laughter always came easily in her presence.
Known by most as an incredibly creative person, Ginny poured her heart and talents into her home and lovingly shared her skills with all her children. She was a skilled seamstress who sewed clothes from scratch, knitted countless warm mittens, and crocheted beautiful afghans and delicate baby clothes. She also loved working with her hands in the local pottery barn, kilning many unique knick-knacks over the years. Back in the day, the family home was always filled with the warmth and delicious aromas of her home cooking.

For the past 62 years, the annual summer camp tradition at Christie's Campground served as the heartbeat of the family. Ginny and her husband, Merle, started this legendary gathering together to celebrate life and the 4th of July. After Merle's passing, Ginny lovingly kept the tradition alive with her family at Christie's, continuing it right up to this past summer. Her family was incredibly blessed to have her fireside once again, enjoying vibrant chats, table games, and competitive rounds of croquet.
Ginny led an active and adventurous life alongside Merle, sharing it fully with her family while always enjoying all their antics. In their earlier years, the couple loved going square dancing and participated in competitive pistol shooting, where they took home a state championship title. Ginny and Merle loved packing the family up for camping trips deep in the Maine woods, sailing the ocean, and jetting across the water on catamarans. Later in life, she discovered her true outdoor passion: tour kayaking on the ocean or paddling across any lake that promised large, exciting waves. Together, she and Merle spent countless summer weekends and a few snowy moments camping and kayaking across the wilderness of Maine.

In her later years, Ginny truly embraced her love for traveling and spent much of her time exploring new places. She thoroughly enjoyed taking numerous bus tour trips all around the United States with her sister, Mavis. One of her other absolute fondest memories was an adventurous trip to England with Merle, where three of her adult children met up with them to travel the scenic countryside. The trip was full of laughter, highlighted by a classic family mishap on the London Tube. Upon arriving at their stop, the kids quickly hopped off the train and turned around only to watch the doors slam shut—leaving a stranded Mom and Dad holding all the luggage as the train sped away. It became a favorite family story told with endless hilarity for decades.
