Philip M. Smith
July 4, 1963 – May 15, 2025
Philip M. Smith, formerly of Maine, passed away unexpectedly on May 15th, 2025, at his home in Georgia. He was 61 years old at the time of his death.
Phil was born on July 4th, 1963, in Bangor, Maine, to parents Philip W. and Sandra D. Smith. He was named Philip Guy Marquis Smith at birth, after his father, Philip, and his grandfather, Guy M. Smith. This led to his nickname, PG, as he was known to his family.
Phil and his parents moved to Hawaii in 1965 while his father was stationed in Viet Nam, serving in the US Navy. There he started his elementary education, where he pulled the fire alarm at school on his first day of kindergarten. This became the first of his numerous hijinks during his time in school. When his family moved back to Maine in 1970, they settled in Limerick, where he attended Limerick Elementary, and later, Massabesic Middle and High Schools.
In the early 80s, Phil joined the Marine Corps, fulfilling a lifelong dream of becoming a Marine. He served proudly as a US Marine, and took pride in his service to his country.
Upon leaving the Marines, Phil settled first in Lewiston, Maine, where he married his first wife, and together they had 3 boys. He later moved the family to Rumford, where he was employed at the local paper mill and raised his family. Phil was always an avid hunter and sportsman, but it was during this time that he truly came to love hunting and harvesting game as a means of putting food on the table.
After the children were grown and his marriage ended, he remarried for a short period of time. As his second marriage didn't last long, he picked up roots and decided to move to warmer climates. He ended up in Florida, where he met the woman who would later become mother to his fourth child, a daughter. He resided in Florida for a number of years, until work brought him to Georgia, where he lived until he passed.
Phil is survived by his 4 children: Philip Smith Jr., of Rumford, Me.; Chris Smith of Leeds, Me.; David Smith of Mexico, Me.; and Sarah Smith of Tangerine, Florida. He had 2 grandchildren: Merida Smith of Rumford and Charlotte Smith of Mexico, Me. Also surviving are his brother and his wife, Kevin and Tracey Smith of Limerick; his sister and her husband, Kelly (Smith) and Peter Kelley of Leeds, Me.; as well as his niece and nephews. He was predeceased by both his parents and a nephew.
Services will be held at the Smith Family Cemetery in Limerick on Sunday, July 13th, at 11:00 a.m.
