Jud Holmquist Obituary (2024)

Judson "Jud" Carl Holmquist, 87, of Westmanland, Maine, passed away on February 10, 2024, in Naples, Florida. He was born on November 10, 1936. Jud was a beloved man known for his sense of humor, kindness, and willingness to help others. Jud served in the Navy for four years. His dedication and service to his country were exemplary. In his career, Jud was a man of ambition. He and his wife, Leona, started with Jud's General Store, then Jud's Cash Market, Jud's Redemption Center, and opened the restaurant Bon Appetit. Additionally, he dedicated 24 years to the United States Postal Service in Sheridan and Ashland. He became a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, as well. As hard as Jud worked, he loved to play. With his family, he loved fishing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and family gatherings. He loved playing cards and games, and golfing with his buddies. Other than his family, Jud's biggest passion was horseshoes. He played regularly with a group of men he considered to be some of his very best friends. He was recently honored for his skills with his name plate placed on the Silver Lakes Double Ringers Memorial Plaque at the court he played on in Florida. Jud is survived by his loving wife and soulmate, Leona, whom he married on November 12, 1960; his favorite daughters Lori Getchell, Jeana Holmquist, and Lisa True and her husband Matt; cherished grandchildren Vincent Hogan and partner, Laura Morel, Brittany Hogan and Monica Lanciano; his treasured great-grandchildren Emmett, Rosealee, Miles, Maddox, and Bowie; as well as his caring sisters Linda Sharp and her husband Warren, and Fern Counes and her husband George. He was preceded in death by his mother, Verna Holmquist; father, Radcliffe Holmquist; brothers, Harvard, Wayne, and John Holmquist; and three sisters, Janet Ketch, Clarice Rossignol and Gale Holmquist. Our beloved father will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. A funeral mass will be held at St. Martha's Church 30 Portland Rd in Kennebunk, Maine, on April 6 at 11:00am. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial with Military Honors will be held at the Northern Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Caribou, Maine, at the convenience of the family. In lieu of donations, the family asks that you do an act of service or kindness to a loved one or someone in need.
